# Gradebox > Gradebox scans handwritten student work and gives teachers suggested grades and feedback in minutes. Paper stays paper; grading gets faster. Gradebox is made by Gradebox, Inc., headquartered in Arizona, USA. Gradebox allows students to submit physical assignments by scanning them with a mobile device. Our Quick Scan OCR technology quickly scans each assignment, decodes the student name, and assigns it to each student in the gradebook based on the name on each page. ### Do I need special equipment to use Gradebox? Gradebox works with the app alone: a phone or tablet is all a teacher needs. We're developing a dedicated classroom scanning bin to make submissions even faster; subscribe below and we'll share pricing and availability when it launches. ### How quickly will I see scanned assignments in my gradebook? Assignments appear (almost) instantly in the digital gradebook once scanned. ### Can I still grade assignments by hand? Yes, teachers can grade physically as usual, but Gradebox allows you to digitize and provide quicker feedback. If you choose to grade by hand, you can still use Gradebox to read each handwritten grade and assign it to each student in the gradebook. Just select the "already graded" checkbox in your scan session settings. ### What if a student leaves their name off the assignment? The system will still capture the image of the student's work, cross-reference the roster against submitted assignments, and provide a recommended list of which students may have submitted the work, showing you previous submissions from each student to compare the handwriting. Eventually, Gradebox will make educated guesses based on each student's handwriting. But as always, ask your students to put their name on their work. ### Does Gradebox integrate with my school's LMS or gradebook? Currently, Gradebox uses an internal gradebook within the app to manage assignments and allows teachers to export grades to a CSV that can be uploaded as a bulk file into the LMS or gradebook of record. We plan to integrate Gradebox with popular systems via API. Subscribe to our newsletter to stay up to date on release dates for new features. ### How much time will this save me compared to traditional grading? Studies show teachers spend 10+ hours per week grading. Gradebox automates submission and organization, saving significant time. Subscribe to our newsletter to get updates on our most recent user data and how much time Gradebox saves on weekly grading. ### Can students submit assignments from home? While this feature does not exist yet, we are currently building it. Students will be able to submit an assignment at home through a secure link sent to the parent and student email when an assignment is not submitted. ### Is Gradebox secure and FERPA compliant? Yes, Gradebox is designed with student data privacy in mind and complies with FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which protects the privacy of student education records. We use end-to-end encryption to secure all data. Teacher accounts are secured via email and login with 2FA enabled for enhanced protection. Parents and students receive a secure link to review grades, feedback, and student assignments, and they must verify their authenticity via a confirmation email code before viewing. ### How does this impact instructional time? By reducing grading time, teachers spend more time planning high quality instruction. Furthermore, studies have shown students who receive timely feedback show about a 33% improvement on learning outcomes compared to those who receive no feedback at all. Imagine bringing this level of feedback to your daily exit tasks or bell ringers! ### What is the cost structure for schools? Every teacher plan starts with a one-month trial that includes the full Pro feature set. After that, plans start at $11.99 per teacher, and each plan includes a monthly scan allowance shown on the pricing section. For districts interested in district or enterprise pricing, reach out to us for a sales meeting. ### How does Gradebox support parent engagement? When a student is onboarded into Gradebox, parents are given the option to opt into student updates via email and select their communication preferences. They can choose to get emails daily, weekly, or monthly regarding their student's progress. Our AI provides a summary of student progress in casual and understandable language while also giving parents the option to view details of assignment feedback through their own custom URL provided in the email. To update their settings, parents can simply respond to the emails to adjust the cadence of updates. ### What training or support is required for teachers? Minimal training is needed; most teachers can start within minutes. There is a brief virtual training (under 5 minutes) that walks teachers through the features and navigation of Gradebox. ### Can this work across all grade levels and subjects? Yes, Gradebox is designed to be flexible from Kindergarten through Higher Education. ### How will I know when my child submits an assignment? You can choose the frequency in which you receive email updates on your student's submissions. You can even choose to receive an email anytime they miss a submission so you can work on the assignment with them at home. ### Can I see my child's grades in real time? Yes, assignments and teacher feedback are available as soon as they are graded. Parents get access to their student's grades via a secure link sent to their email of record for the school. Parents can use this link to view grades, submissions, and feedback on assignments in a web app. ### What if my child doesn't have access to the scanning bin at home? Parents or students can scan assignments using their mobile device (tablet or phone). ### Will my child still keep their physical assignments? Yes, Gradebox digitizes without collecting paper. Students keep the original work. ### Is my child's data safe? Yes, Gradebox is designed with student data privacy in mind and complies with FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which protects the privacy of student education records. We use end-to-end encryption to secure all data. Teacher accounts are secured via email and login with 2FA enabled for enhanced protection. Parents and students receive a secure link to review grades, feedback, and student assignments, and they must verify their authenticity via a confirmation email code before viewing. ## Contact - Website: https://gradebox.ai/ - Grants program: grants@gradebox.ai - Book a demo: https://meetings-na2.hubspot.com/josh-mcdonald
